Business Course Descriptions Open to: 9-12 Credits: 1 Duration: Two Terms
Accounting Prerequisite: N/A Accounting - If you plan on going into or studying business in the future, this class is a must. Accounting deals with the planning, keeping, analyzing and interpreting of financial records. Both large and small profit-making organizations use accounting information to make decisions. Accounting prepares students not only to keep records, but analyze and interpret them so that they can make wise decisions in business situations. Students use hands-on assignments and practice sets to help learn concepts. Open to: 10-12 Credits: 1 Duration: Two Terms
Accounting II Prerequisite: Accounting I, with a “C-” average or better. Accounting II is a continuation of first year Accounting. Integration of accounting practices and related computer skills prepare advanced students for future employment. Students may be eligible for articulation credit at local colleges upon completion of the course. Open to: 9-12 Credits: .5-2 Duration: Two Terms preferred, may sign up for one Term Business Services & Technology 1 & 2 (BST Lab)
Prerequisite: Must receive C- or higher in BST 1 to advance to BST 2 or instructor permission. BST 1 provides basic computer training for all students-those that will be going to college or entering the business workforce. Students will use a variety of software in Windows, including Office 2010, which features Word (word processing), Excel (spreadsheet), Access (database), PowerPoint (presentation slides), Publisher (desktop publishing). Units include: Internet activities, keyboarding skill development, document formatting, and basic business presentation skills. Students will also use digital cameras and scanners.
Open to: 9-12 Credits: .5-2 Duration: One trimester each Business Systems & Technology 3 & 4 (BST Lab) Prerequisite: Must receive C- or higher in BST 2 or instructor permission. Students will build on software skills acquired in BST I. Additional skills include software integration, Internet Projects, Web Integration Features, business simulations, Pagemaker (desktop publishing) and the use of equipment such as digital cameras and scanners. Students may be eligible for articulation credit at local colleges upon completion of the course. Students gain knowledge to prepare them for Microsoft user certification.

Business Systems & Technology 5 & 6 (BST Lab) Prerequisite: Must receive C- or higher in BST 4 or instructor permission. B.S.T. 5 & 6 provides advanced computer training for students that will be going to college or entering the workforce. Students will be learning the advanced software skills in the Office 2007 suite. Advanced training in the use of digital cameras, scanners, and other multi-media features will be provided. Students may be eligible for articulation credit at local colleges upon completion of the course. Successful completion will prepare them for advanced levels of Microsoft Office certification. Open to: 11-12 Credits: .5 Duration: One trimester each Web Page Design Prerequisite: One Term of BST with a C- or better. Web Page Design covers the basics of Web site planning, design, building, and management. It is designed for students that have limited or no experience in creating Web pages, but anyone can take the class. Students will learn the basic elements of web page design, HTML, and working with graphics. Software used will primarily be Adobe. Projects include personal and information Web pages, as well as working on pages for the FHS Web site. Open to: 9-12 Credits: .5 Duration: One trimester Advanced Web Page Design Prerequisite: BST 1 and Web Page Design. Web Page Design II continues the student’s training in Web Page Design. Students will focus on building their skills in the elements of Web Page Design, HTML, multimedia, and working with graphics. Software used will be the Adobe suite. Networking Prerequisite: BST I, Web Page Design, and Advanced Web Page. Students will continue their study of Web design technology through learning networking concepts. Students will focus on network foundations, IT project management, TCP/IP and Internet addressing, server technology, hardware maintenance, network security, and IT career opportunities.

Marketing I Prerequisite: N/A Marketing I is an introductory class designed for students interested in learning about marketing and business. This course enables students to understand and use technology to perform marketing activities. Marketing students will study the functions of marketing, economics, and job development skills. Students will have the opportunity to become members of our DECA chapter, a vocational student organization designed to develop a student's leadership skills, business knowledge, and community involvement. Students are required to work in the school store, The Fruitport Marketplace that is used as a laboratory for students to learn marketing skills. Students may be eligible for articulation credit at local colleges upon completion of this course. Open to: 10-12 Credits: 1 Duration: Two terms
Marketing II Prerequisite: Marketing I with a C- or better or approval of Instructor. Marketing II is a continuation of the Marketing I curriculum. The focus of the course is on selling, promotion, and customer service. Students will be responsible for working and managing the Fruitport Marketplace School Store and making decisions about pricing, promotions, and product purchase. Students may be eligible for articulation credit at local colleges upon completion of this course. Becoming a DECA member and participation in DECA is highly recommended in this class.

Marketing III Prerequisite: Marketing II with a C- or better or approval of instructor. Marketing III is a two term course that puts the previous years curriculum into action. Students are responsible for ordering merchandise, selecting products to sell, record keeping and managing the Fruitport Marketplace school store. Students enrolled in this course will also create and write a business plan research paper as part of this course. Becoming a DECA member and participating in DECA is highly recommended in this class. Open to: 11-12 Credits: .5 Duration: One Term
Sports and Entertainment - Marketing Prerequisite: N/A Sports and Entertainment Marketing introduces the student to the marketing and management functions and tasks that can be applied in amateur or professional sports and events, entertainment, selling space or equipment for events, and the hospitality industry. Students will also have the opportunity to take classroom knowledge and apply it within DECA competition.
